CONFERENCES:

Say you are organizing or attending a conference or meeting, and you need to end up with a record of what's said. (This also works if you cannot attend an important meeting or conference, and you need someone to take notes for you.)

If you do not require a verbatim transcript*, but you want a thorough record of the proceedings, this is one of Andrew's specialtiesand he can give you the record on a diskette at the end of the day. Having conducted hundreds of interviews at the keyboard of his laptop over the past five years, he can type just about as fast as people talk. The editing and correcting takes place during breaks and prepared speeches.

How many conferences have you been to that overwhelmed you? Even though there were jewels among the sea of presentations, chances are they didn't take on a life outside the conference...which is why these mega-events present unusual opportunities for publicity. If your company is going to be presenting on a revolutionary discovery/ process/ breakthrough, why not give the media a heads up? That's exactly what the Nova Scotia CAD/CAM Centre at DalTech did in 1994 when they showcased the design of a revolutionary steel-free bridge deck. They invited Andrew to attend which resulted in the following articles:

  • "On the Bridge" - Atlantic Progress
  • "Look Ma, No Rebar" - Canadian Consulting Engineer
  • "Fourth International Conference on Short and Medium-Span Bridges" - Canadian Civil Engineer
  • "Tie Bars Replace Slab Rebar" - Engineering-News Record (US)
  • "Short Span Bridges" - World Highways (UK)
