BACKGROUNDERS

Since the press release should be focused on the newsworthy event or development that's being announced, the Backgrounder can be a useful tool for filling in additional information about your company or organization. Not too tight and not too loose is a good formula to apply here. If it's too tight, you're not providing enough information, and if it's too loose, it's too long and no one will read it. In the age of the Web it's much easier for editors and writers to find background information than it was pre-Web, but there's still something to be said for having all of the information in one place, along with the release.

Once prepared, the Backgrounder can serve a multitude of uses. It can be handed out as a key information piece to prospective clients, members, investors, partners, and anyone else who wants to know more about your company or organization. The Backgrounder must, however, be updated or rewritten periodically to ensure that it remains current.
