Two-year old Brooklyn North developed the first commercial Web page editor, HTML Assistant Pro. which is used to create electronic documents. But CEO Cheryl Gillett says the market for programs such as Assistant Pro is getting crowded.
As a result, the company is moving to develop software that will allow administrators to set up on-line courses, and it has just been awarded a market research grant from Toronto-based International Data Corp. (Canada) Ltd. to guide its move into software for adult education courses offered on the Web.
Brooklyn North is further bolstering that niche-driven approach by seeking alliances with textbook publishers in order to take advantage of their marketing strength and experience.
Most of the company's 10 staff members have a background in education. Ms. Gillett says this first-hand experience gives her company an invaluable edge in tailoring its software.
And, she says, the IDC Canada grant is an important indication that 1997 will be a breakthrough year for Brooklyn North. "It puts us on the map of growing companies in Canada."
